Why Slow Down for Earth Day?

Audio of this page (894KB, 1:54)

Earth Day will soon be here and we are encouraging everyone to slow down for a week. Driving Slowly will reduce oil, will decrease the impact we have on the environment, and save you money.

I did the test and drove our normal 75mph+ for one tank of gas and recorded the mileage, and then drove 5-10 mph slower than previously and got the following results.

I'm now saving over 85 cents a day or $200 per year during my work commute. I save over 33 cents per gallon - each gallon takes me 2+ miles further than it used to. I'm reducing the output of my vehicle by over 1000 pounds of carbon emissions per year.

Here are many reasons why you should drive slowly:

  • Save Money
By driving 10 mph slower on the freeway you can save over 10% on your fuel bill, and fill your car up less frequently. Over a year this adds up to hundreds of dollars.
  • Save Fuel
Our country grows more and more dependent on foreign oil each day. If everyone drove a little more slowly we could reduce US oil consumption by 1 million barrels a day.
  • Save Our Planet
Carbon content of the atmosphere has been shown to affect our climate. Personal vehicles are one of the largest contributers to the carbon load on the Earth.
  • Save Lives
The single greatest thing you can do to increase your safety is to reduce your speed. In 2004 nearly fifty thousand people died in motor vehicle accidents. The force of an impact increases geometrically with speed - this means that the human body is subjected to 36% greater impact at 70mph than at 60mph.

Start today! Join millions of your fellow Americans who reap the benefits of slowing down. Then tell us about your experience.
